Meeting – Richard Lederer, Language Columnist & Wordsmith

10 Mar 2026 12:00 PM | Angelique Schumacher (Administrator)

President Gordon Boerner rang the bell to kick off our March luncheon at the Westgate Hotel, welcoming members and guests for a truly entertaining and memorable program.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance, the meeting highlighted several meaningful moments within our club community, including a special recognition of member Conny Jamison—honored as the 2nd female president in KCSD history—alongside the recognition of Dr. Michael Welch as Kiwanian of the Day. We also celebrated the ongoing Kiwanis/SDSD partnership and recognized our 2025–26 Community Impact Grant recipients.

President Boerner then introduced our featured guest speaker, Richard Lederer, who brought laughter, energy, and wordplay brilliance to the room with his presentation, “Jest for the Pun of It.” Through a lively blend of storytelling, humor, and clever linguistic twists, Dr. Lederer reminded us that language is both powerful and playfully entertaining.

As the author of more than 60 books and a celebrated voice on language and literacy, he shared highlights from his career along with a collection of unforgettable (and delightfully groan-worthy) puns. His wit and charm kept the audience engaged and laughing from start to finish.

Following the program, members and guests enjoyed the opportunity to connect with Dr. Lederer and have their books personally signed.

Club updates were shared, including membership news, upcoming events, and additional opportunities to stay engaged in service and leadership.

During Bill’s Bucks, members generously contributed in celebration of:
• A laughter-filled and engaging presentation
• Gratitude for the joy and connection brought through language
• The continued camaraderie and spirit of Kiwanis

President Boerner closed the meeting by thanking Dr. Lederer for a truly “pun-forgettable” presentation and encouraging members to continue participating in upcoming club activities.

As always, the luncheon was filled with connection, learning, and plenty of laughter.
