Program: How Environmental Law Affects Your Life in San Diego

Speaker: Tim Patterson

April 4, 2023 ~ 7:30 a.m.

1100 Market St., San Diego 92101

For the past five years, Tim Patterson has been a lecturer at the University of California, San Diego, where he has taught the Environmental Law course offered by the school’s Environmental Studies Program. As a teacher, he seeks to provide undergraduate students with a real world perspective on the major environmental protection laws and related public policies affecting our society today.

For over 40 years, Tim served as a Deputy Attorney General and later as a Supervising Deputy Attorney General of the Environment Section of the California Attorney General’s Office in San Diego. He has argued environmental protection cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the California Supreme Court, and several California Courts of Appeal. He also litigated environmental issues in federal district courts and bankruptcy courts, state trial courts and state administrative tribunals. Topics he has worked on include greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, regional air and water pollution, hazardous waste dumpsites, toxic chemicals in commercial products, land use and transportation planning, endangered species, and coastal resource protection.

As a public attorney, Tim was fortunate to be able to participate in the development of significant legal precedents in several subject areas of federal and state environmental law.

Tim received a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science, with Highest Honors, from UC Santa Barbara in 1973, and a Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from the University of Santa Clara School of Law, in 1976. He retired from the California Attorney General’s Office in 2017 and has been a part-time lecturer at UC San Diego since 2019.
