Part of an international network, SVP seeks to enrich the social sector by investing time and money in non-profits in an effort to increase the organizational capacity and sustainability of those organizations. SVP has provided hundreds of millions of dollars of pro bono consulting services and funding to hundreds of nonprofits in 25 cities across the US and in Japan and Canada. The San Diego affiliate was awarded Outstanding Philanthropic Organization of San Diego in 2011.

Dan became a proponent of collective impact while working on a Promise Neighborhood grant with the United Way of Worcester, MA. He has a particular interest in youth and education and believes there is a huge opportunity to improve the capital flow in the nonprofit market.

After starting his career as a Certified Financial Planner, Dan returned to business school where he earned an MBA and subsequently joined Adams, Harkness and Hill, an emerging-growth focused investment bank. Most recently, Dan ran Sales Operations for Infinia Corp, a venture-financed solar equipment manufacturer.

Notes from Meeting on April 24th & Happy/Sad Buck

We had some decent introductory performances for once, probably because no club members were involved…invocation from Rebecca Alderink, song from Sonya Kubik, and pledge from James Bennett…

Gene Auerbach chipped in for Charlie forgetting to remove his ‘Freedom Cap’ during the national anthem…Bill Gibbs had the good luck to find three pretty girls at his table…Ken Coley still hasn’t finished playing the million holes o’ golf, but is appreciative of all the support he has received…John Kizer, world traveler, brought back some goodies…Brian Krause lost his checkbook but didn’t care, and claims to be having a YP Happy Hour to which everyone in the world is invited except The Tidings himself…

The Joker Knows: Tim O’Reilly again, at least it was for the big money for real this time, and Jon Tibbitts, received the munificent (look it up) sums of $9 and $6, respectively…

Coley’s Flowers: Tim bid considerably more than $9 to win…

Presentations: Wes Dawson was inducted a member…

Richard Yamaguchi received his square badge in record time – it was so fast it exceeded the speed of light!  Margie Himes, who has a day job that makes it hard for her to get to meetings, brought most of the SD High Key Club with her…and got a square badge to boot!

Margie Himes, teacher.

Key Club!

John Kizer introduced John Irons to receive his 25 year legion of Honor recognition – 25 years of dedicated service to his community – hearty congratulations!  Oxy, distinguished naval career, and now his service to us…

Travel Treasures: Kizer got tourist treasures from his travels, and Corrine was overwhelmed by the plethora of fabulous stuff…Charlie picked up a nicer hat than he was wearing….coffee cups, balloons, hats, boy they really saw you coming, John…

I didn't have to use the red-eye filter on this one, folks...

John Irons then gave a presentation on our many scholarship award recipients -  a fine group of students from SDSU, USD, and Pt. Loma Nazarene.  A pleasure to have them all join us for lunch!

Notes from Meeting on April 17th & Happy/Sad Buck

Things started off with an invocation on a cell phone that was balky and an Air Force appreciation – who sang the song, anyway?…Three birthdays and three birthday boys showed up, a record – The Tidings is shown trying to remember how old he is, and how many miles he rode Sunday, and how long he has been in Kiwanis…

"...uhhh, twenty-five cents?"

congrats to Ken Coley and Dave Wood…Ethel brought a guest, Miranda Morrison, and Ron thought that was a great name for an attorney…Marilyn Copeland was happy, and invited everyone to breakfast…Lynn Graver is bringing the Key Club to Kiwanis One Day, and rode the Golden Gate Bridge up to Mill Valley and down to Sharktown…Fritz chipped in just because…Ken slipped in another $5 for the million holes of golf he is playing…

Judy L said we have a great promo spot for the Cinco de Mayo concert, now available on YouTube…Charlie was interrupting bear again…Carl Martens has a son who is now a colonel in Colorado (somebody should write a song)…

Bill Gibbs yay!…Connie Jamison owes everybody drinks for the HIO she scored…Monica was late, and Mark was broke and paid his fine in pennies due to what high taxes he is paying…Eldon is sorry to miss K One Day, he’ll be visiting Battle Creek MI to see his mother in law…

The Joker Knows: It was 50/50 again…O’Reilly won, even tho the only reason he plays is to win the big money…

Coley’s Flowers: What?!?!? Bill Gibbs?!?!?…and then a lizard from Cozumel from Jon Tibbitts?!?!?

…but Ken Coley’s basket from Odessa Texas was taken by Monica Ball who just wouldn’t let Bill win everything…

Presentations: John Irons introduced our military guests, US Marine First Sergeant Matthew Hackett and Staff Sergeant Jerry Correa.

Notes from Meeting on April 3rd & Happy/Sad Bucks

We started out with Ryan providing an appropriately Irish invocation, and Joe singing an obscure verse of My Country ‘Tis Of Thee in something other than the soprano register…

No birthday children showed up, but we did have a number of guests/prospective members…Wes Dawson, Dan Bercad, Mike Spangler, Chris Joseph, and the representative from the Children’s Museum whose name passed by this intrepid reporter much too quickly…

Merely one of our many visitors...

Happy/Sad $ – Joe for Brian & Ryan…Suzie for her pals still in town and Monarch School’s recognition on Ellen…Wes for a first grandchild (that’s the spirit!)…Mark McDonald, sad for Oscar Knight, but glad we sent some members to the memorial…

Pledge web site is www.scga.org/marathoners )…Heather Robinson collected her square badge and is riding for the diabetes cure…

Jay Jeffcoat pledged $20 on account since his property tax bill wiped him out…Charlie wore a poor facsimile of a fine free badge…

"Sorry, can you all keep it down? I'm trying to make a phone call here!"

Tom Bauer announced more interclubs, and had no excuses for the absence of the fine free badge…

"I forgot the badge again?"

Arthur introduced Connie who introduced Father David Ungerleider and provided our club’s support for the bookmobile in Tijuana serving all the children of the city, now including the children of deportees…

Somehow, we missed Connie...

Ken Coley was recognized for his leadership during his term as president of the club which resulted in our club being tagged as a ‘Distinguished Club’ (Ken gets a cool new lapel pin, The Tidings happens to know…)

The Joker Knows: Don Sturek, intrepid photographer and Jay Jeffcoat, broke and homeless, won the raffle but didn’t get the big money…

The Tidings – April 3, 2012 – Dr. Marian Liebowitz SDSU Concert in the Park

Program for April 10, 2012

The UT & The Waterfront

Speaker – John Lynch

Chairman of the Day – Brian Krause, UBS

Invocation – Ryan Callan

A word about our speaker.

John Lynch was raised in Chicago, Illinois and attended Drake University where he secured a BA in journalism and played football. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers. His career shortened by injuries, he went to work for the Chicago Tribune. He then joined Westinghouse Broadcasting.  In 1972, he moved to San Diego to join KFMB.

John Lynch built a major broadcast company, the Noble Broadcast Group. Noble was founded in 1978 with a Mexican radio station serving all of Southern California and a license of a powerful FM station to serve San Diego. In 1996, Noble was sold to Jacor and then Clear Channel for $153,000,000, securing outstanding returns for its investors. In addition to traditional radio, Noble developed sports networks, a syndication Company and launched the career of Jim Rome, nationally syndicated talk show host.

In 2004 Lynch created Broadcast Company of the Americas and launched XX 1090 (sports), flagship station of the San Diego Padres and 105.7 FM, The Walrus, a highly successful classic hits station. In early 2010 lynch led a partnership to purchase out of foreclosure, Finest City Broadcast for $25,000,000. Finest City had been capitalized for $115,000,000 in 2006.

Over the course of his career, Lynch has raised hundreds of millions of equity and debt to build several companies.

On December 8th, Manchester Lynch Integrated Media purchased The San Diego Union-Tribune. Their mission is to build an integrated media company.

Lynch lives in Rancho Santa Fe with his wife, Cathy. He is the father of Kara, John Jr. (who was a heck of a football player at a major private West Coast university located in the Bay Area…) and Ryan, and grandfather of nine.

Notes from Meeting on April 3rd & Happy/Sad Buck

As we began the meeting (immediately after consuming our government mandated portion of broccoli), Tom Bauer came up to first say some words about a phenomenal Kiwanian, Oscar Knight, who sadly passed away last week. Memorial Services will be this Saturday and contact Tom for more info. He then gave us a wonderful invocation and then The Tidings himself led us through You’re A Grand Old Flag!

As for guests, we were happy to have Dudley Mills, Past Lt. Governor grace us with his presence.

Dudley!

Suzie Zlaket brought her buddies Barb & Frank. Scody Hage introduced a former 1st lady of the club, Bonnie Hage…and probably had to pay a fine for not having her sign the guest list…

Since we were taking things out of order, Judy came to introduce our Program for the Day, Dr. Marian Liebowitz, who is best known for spice and leading us into amazing experiences. We are lucky to have her as a member for the past 9 years.

Our Annual Concert in Balboa Park is a very special event that we have Marian to thank for it. This year, it happens to be the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla and in turn the Mexican Consulate in San Diego has decided to be a huge sponsor! And boy do these people know how to party! At the VIP Reception you will find a tequila bar, a cerveza bar, a keg, coffee, and array of Mexican treats, so you really don’t want to miss this year!

Marian was accompanied by her colleague Patrick Walders and 9 students that are part of the SDSU choir and will be performing in this years concert. These gifted singers started us off with a selected special piece to motivate Tom Bauer, who gave up alcohol for lent, to stay off the sauce for the next week.  They then sang a very special song for Oscar Knight, “Soon I’ll Be Done With the Troubles of this World,” which was VERY impressive! The last piece was a latino-cuban fusion that will be featured at the concert and it was amazing! Be sure to attend the Cinco de Mayo Concert in the Park so you can see the incredible talent of the SDSU students!

We had our Happy/Sad Buck session at the end of the meeting this time!

Ken Coley: delivered See’s candy and brought in 5 extra chocolate eggs – all proceeds goes to Monarch School – Norma Trost: $5 happy, last September 30th her nephew was involved in very serious auto accident and he came home 2 weeks ago!!

Bill Gibbs: still here! (and aren’t we SO thankful!)

"I'm still here!"

Art Stillwell: $5 congratulate Dick Shaw but add to recognition that he served as legal counsel for Club & Foundation for years and years!

Bonnie Hage: $5 congratulate Scody & Dick! Scody Hage: $5 happy Bonnie joined us for lunch! Judy: $2 for awardees! Vic Bianchini: $5 for winning the Silver Medal at North American Fencing Conference! Congrats!

The Silver Medalist!

June Prewitt: $5 to congratulate both Dick & Scody who are sterling examples of what Kiwanians can do, congratulated Vic, and apologized to Ron Monroe because we hurried up his birthday last week - Ron Monroe made up for it by donating his big birthday check!

The Joker Knows: Vic Bianchini $4 & Dave Gugerty – millions…

Coley’s Flowers: Oh wait you mean Bill’s flowers? He gave them to Bonnie Hage this time! What a guy…

Presentations:

Dave Wood came to the podium to induct Robert – Bob – Graham. Bob has been a friend of Kiwanis for many years and was very active in the Coronado club. Bob does more for the community than anyone he can think of. He’s always looking for a project for people who need help and we’re very fortunate to have Bob joining our club! We welcome you to the club, Bob!

Dick Shaw came up to present Scody Hage with his 35 Legion of Honor Pin. We were happy Bonnie was in attendance, Scody’s wife of 39 years. Dick started off by saying that Scody demonstrates all good things of the club.

He says he’s a 3rd generation native of SD, a graduate of Point Loma High School, went to a school up north called USC, SMU graduate school and went into commercial banking for 38 years. Then, 4 years ago he was hired by San Diego Food Bank. He has always been very active in this community – Past President of Club, Foundation, Laurels for Leaders, and a Distinguished Eagle Scout! We were happy to present the legion of honor for 35 years of membership! We’re happy to have you Scody!

Scody Hage then came up to present Dick Shaw with his 35 Legion of Honor Pin. When Scody asked Dick for a short resume, he first sent one the size of a phone book…

The next one Scody received had such small font he could barely read it – typical attorney! Dick has an extensive resume – graduated from University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Science – is a California Certified Specialist in Taxation Law – Past chair of ABA Taxation Group – Past President of American Bar Association – Testified in front of Congress about tax law changes – Lectures at University of San Diego. Currently, Dick works for Higgs, Fletcher & Mack. He has been actively involved with the San Diego Community for many years – County of Boy Scouts, President of Eagle Scouts, President of SD Kiwanis Club, Laurels for Leaders, and also a recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout – Congrats Dick Shaw on your achievement! We’re so happy to have you!

Travel Treasures: While Corrine ditched our meeting last week, she was sipping on some vino up north in wine country and since she felt bad we were left out, she brought back some for us! The wine she brought was called Jarhead Red and it is produced by Firestone Winery. This wine is made in support of Marines and all proceeds go to scholarships for children of fallen Marine’s! Suzie’s guest, Frank, outbid everyone! And then WAIT, there happens to be one more! So Tom Bauer went home with the other bottle and will be cuddling it until Sunday!

"But wait, there's more, you get..."
